Viper Alley, Tuesday June 26, 2012
I must admit, that despite being a music junkie, I had not heard of Tower of Power until just a couple weeks ago. However, as soon as I heard their song, What Is Hip, released in 1973, I started thinking…What is hip?
Ripped jeans, neon colored clothing, stripes, Oakley’s, Tom’s shoes, and accent nails seem to be the current fashion. There’s no doubt that what is hip in the year 2012 is different than what was hip in 1973.
No matter the year, what defines hip is constantly changing and people are altering the clothes they wear, their behavior, the music they listen to, and themselves in a way to keep up with society and be accepted.
The lyrics in What Is Hip, really struck a chord with me. Especially the following lyrics, which proved that no matter what’s going on in the world, people may make more changes in their lives to adjust with society, than changes to anything else.
“You went an' found you a guru.
In an effort to find you a new you,
And maybe even manage to raise your conscious level.
While you're striving to find the right road,
There's one thing you should know,
‘What's hip today, might become passé'."
This is going to be a great show and Viper Alley is just the place for it! Artists from all genre backgrounds travel to perform at Viper Alley. And Tower of Power has quite the background! The group is made up of ten musicians playing the trumpet, tenor sax, guitar, drums, trumpet & trombone, baritone sax, another tenor sax, bass, keyboards, and vocals.
As a girl in her twenties, I find myself wondering if my friends or other people my age would enjoy listening to Tower of Power or even attending a concert by them. It may or may not be “hip” but really,
“What is hip?
Tell me, tell me, if you think you know.
What is hip?
If you're really hip,
the question, ‘Will it show?’"
