Viper Alley, Tuesday June 26, 2012
I must admit, that despite being a music junkie, I had not heard of Tower of Power until just a couple weeks ago. However, as soon as I heard their song, What Is Hip, released in 1973, I started thinking…What is hip?
Ripped jeans, neon colored clothing, stripes, Oakley’s, Tom’s shoes, and accent nails seem to be the current fashion. There’s no doubt that what is hip in the year 2012 is different than what was hip in 1973.
No matter the year, what defines hip is constantly changing and people are altering the clothes they wear, their behavior, the music they listen to, and themselves in a way to keep up with society and be accepted.
The lyrics in What Is Hip, really struck a chord with me. Especially the following lyrics, which proved that no matter what’s going on in the world, people may make more changes in their lives to adjust with society, than changes to anything else.
“You went an' found you a guru.
In an effort to find you a new you,
And maybe even manage to raise your conscious level.
While you're striving to find the right road,
There's one thing you should know,
‘What's hip today, might become passé'."
This is going to be a great show and Viper Alley is just the place for it! Artists from all genre backgrounds travel to perform at Viper Alley. And Tower of Power has quite the background! The group is made up of ten musicians playing the trumpet, tenor sax, guitar, drums, trumpet & trombone, baritone sax, another tenor sax, bass, keyboards, and vocals.
As a girl in her twenties, I find myself wondering if my friends or other people my age would enjoy listening to Tower of Power or even attending a concert by them. It may or may not be “hip” but really,
“What is hip?
Tell me, tell me, if you think you know.
What is hip?
If you're really hip,
the question, ‘Will it show?’"

Taste of Chicago: July 11-15, 2012
Grant Park, Chicago: Every summer since 1980, The world's largest food festival, aka, The Taste of Chicago, has been held at Grant Park. There's plenty to do at The Taste and plenty to eat. Tents of restaurants and cooking demonstrations fill the park.
This summer, food will be served by: Abbey Pub, Bacino's, Billy Goat Inn, BJ's Market & Bakery, Bobak's, Carbon Live Fire Mexican Grill, Churro Factory, Connie's, Cubby Bear, Dominick's, Eli's, Franco's Ristorante, Gold Coast Dogs, Harold's Chicken, Iyanze, Kasia's, Lao Sze Chuan, Lou Malnati's Pizzeria, Oak Street Beach Cafe, O'Brien's Restaurant, Original Rainbow Cone, Pazzo's, Polo Cafe and Catering Bridgeport U.S.A., Reggio's Pizza Express III, Ricobene's, Robinson's No. 1 Ribs, Sabor Latino, Star of Siam, Texas de Brazil, The Fudge Pot, The Noodle Vietnamese Restaurant, The Smoke Daddy, Timothy O'Toole's Pub, Tuscany,...
When you enter Grant Park, you walk to one of the booths with people waiting in line to buy tickets. These tickets will serve as your payment to buying food and beverages throughout the park. You can buy a "taste" of an item for less tickets than if you buy the "meal" of that version. All in all, I consider it a pretty sweet deal. You can spend your whole day there, since the Taste opens at 11 a.m. all five days and closes at 9 p.m.
Perhaps, the best part of the Taste for me, is of course the MUSIC!! ALL DAY LONG!! Between the Bud Light Stage with their "theme" days and the Petrillo Music Shell Concerts, I can't decide which is better.
This year, at the Bud Light Stage performing...

In closing, The Taste of Chicago is a MUST!! As a side note, the crowd size depends on the time of day and the concerts for that day/night. Morning through mid-day, Grant Park is walkable and your crowd type is mostly families or parents and strollers. 3 p.m. and after, once again, depending on the concert playing that night, at it's worst, Grant Park can become impossible to walk through and finding a nice spot to relax will probably never happen.
